Ian Brady

Ian Brady

As a young child, Ian Brady enjoyed torturing and killing animals, once setting a dog on fire and later started attacking children as well. At his primary school (Camden Street) he was considered an underachiever and kept to himself. He later studied at Shawlands Academy but still wouldn't apply himself to his work. He became fascinated by the Nazis and Hitler and even tried to learn German. His favourite books were Hitler's Mein Kampf, Crime and Punishment and less well known books about sadism. Between the ages of 13 and 16, Brady was charged with breaking and entering as well as burglary 3 times. After the 3rd time he was moved to Manchester to stay with his mother and step-father. He took up crime again and spent time in Strangeways Prison when he was aged 17. He was released in November 1957 and Met Myra Hindley in 1961. He began to believe that murder is necessary, never criminal. As of 2011, Brady is the longest serving prisoner in England and Wales. He is currently in Ashworth Psychiatric Hospital on Merseyside.
