How were they caught?

Ian Brady and Myra Hindley were arrested following the murder of Edward Evans, which David Smith, Myra's brother-in-law witnessed and cleaned up the blood, as he feared for his life.

David Smith lived with his wife, and Myra's sister, Maureen Smith on an estate in Hattersley, not far from Wardle Brook Avenue where Hindley's Grandmother lived after being moved out of Gorton. Brady came up with a plan to demand money from a business man to pay for the rent for David and Maureen's apartment. David agreed as long as there would be no violence involved. On the night of the murder of Edward Evans, Myra arrived at the Smith's apartment at about 11:30 to ask Maureen to pass on a message to their mother. When Maureen asked why so late, she said that she'd forgotten. Myra then asked David to walk her home as she didn't feel safe on the estate in the dark. David agreed and then when they were just across the road, Myra stopped David and asked him to wait across the road until she flicked the landing light on and off as a signal to come over to the house. Brady opened the door  and said in a loud voice "Have you come for those miniatures?" so David said yes and was led into the kitchen. At this point the living room door was closed. Brady asked, "Do you want those others?" and David, again, replied yes. Brady then disappeared into the living room. After about 10 seconds, a very loud scream was heard and Edward kept screaming. David then heard Myra shout "Dave, help him!" David then ran into the living room and saw Brady brutally murdering Edward Evans with a hatchet. Ian then placed a plastic cover over Edward's head and pulled an electrical cord round his neck and pulled until Edward stopped gurgling with blood. Brady then stood up and told Myra jokingly, "That's the messiest yet." Myra then went and got rags and water to clean up the blood and asked David to help. David, at this point shocked by what he had just witnessed, helped clean up the pools of blood. After the cleanup was done, Myra made a pot of tea and then made jokes about when they were on the moors and had a body in the back of the minivan and a police officer turned up and Myra said "My plugs are wet, I'm just drying them out" and the police officer left. By this point, Brady had noticed that he had hurt his ankle and would not be able to lift the body of Evans that night. Myra suggested that they use the pram of David and Maureen's baby that has passed away. David then said "I'll have to be going now" and ran the road back to the estate where he and Maureen lived. He broke down and told Maureen of everything that happened and she suggested that they wait till light to go to the police. At about 6am, when the milkmen were about, David and Maureen ran to the local phone box armed with a knife and screwdriver in case they were met by Brady and Hindley and called the police. After giving a statement at the local police station, 16 Wardle Brook Avenue was searched and the body of Edward Evans was found along with the hatchet in Myra's bedroom. Other evidence was found that was incriminating in the disappearance of John Kilbride, as his name was written in Brady's journal. Lesley Ann Downey's voice was on a tape and photos of her naked, tied up and gagged were found in suitcases left at Manchester police station - the tickets for the suitcases were found in Hindley's prayer book.
